Onyx

Few stones command a room like Onyx. With its luminous translucency and richly saturated colour bands, Onyx is the stone of drama and distinction. Best experienced where light can interact with its surface, it transforms countertops, feature walls, and vanities into works of living art.

Onyx is best reserved for feature applications where its dramatic translucency and colour depth can be fully appreciated. It excels as backlit feature walls, statement vanity tops, bar fronts, reception counters, and decorative panels. It is not recommended for high-traffic flooring or heavy-use surfaces without specialist treatment.

Onyx is among the most delicate of natural stones and demands attentive care. Use only pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaners and the softest possible cloths. Never use acidic, abrasive, or ammonia-based products. Keep the surface dry when not in use and avoid direct exposure to harsh sunlight for extended periods, which may affect colour over time.

Onyx should be professionally sealed before installation and resealed regularly — at minimum once a year. Given its softness, it is susceptible to scratching and etching; professional resurfacing may be required periodically to maintain its polished finish. Backlit installations should be checked periodically to ensure the lighting system is not generating heat that could stress the stone.

Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony formed from silica-rich groundwater and is significantly softer and more fragile than marble or granite. Its translucency — one of its most coveted qualities — means that it can be dramatically backlit to reveal extraordinary depth and colour. Handle with care during fabrication and installation. It is a statement material that rewards considered placement and diligent care.
