Marble should be professionally sealed before installation and resealed at least once a year, or more frequently in heavily used areas. Etching — the dull marks left by acidic contact — is the most common form of damage and can be remedied through professional honing and re-polishing. Over time, high-traffic marble floors benefit from periodic diamond-pad restoration to maintain an even, luminous finish.
Marble is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of recrystallised carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. It is this calcium-rich composition that makes it reactive to acids — and therefore one of the more demanding natural stones to maintain. Its incomparable veining is formed by mineral impurities introduced during metamorphism, meaning every slab is genuinely unique.
